Tim Gruba was diagnosed with end stage renal disease on 31 December 2021 and it was a complete shock to him and his family.   After 31 years of marriage (and military service), Tim and his wife, Holly, were looking forward to spending time in semi-retirement together.  They planned to spend summers at their lake site with their 2 grown children and many family members and then turning into snow birds in the winter. Instead, 2022 was a whirlwind of adapting to life as a dialysis patient. Tim had his fistula and peritoneal port placed in February and quickly began peritoneal dialysis – luckily this was able to be completed nightly at home. They considered this a small blessing during an overwhelming lifestyle change.  After settling into a dialysis routine, it was decided that Tim would go onto the organ donation waitlist for a kidney. This wasn’t an easy decision, Tim and his entire family recognize the incredible gift of a healthier life that selfless individuals have chosen to give to others. There were people who knew Tim that chose to be tested for a potential match — known as a living donor — and the family was overwhelmed at the amount of people who volunteered.   Two incredible men were perfect matches. After being told that it could take years to find an O blood type compatible kidney, Tim had two people willing to walk this journey with him and provide that life saving kidney.  A lifelong friend will be donating their kidney to Tim, they said it was the very least they could do to repay the friendship of an incredible man.

2022 was an exercise in patience, grace, and trusting that there is a plan. Tim and his family were given this path to walk and have overcome every obstacle, surprise, and curveball together. Tim and Holly have leaned on their faith and are endlessly grateful for the prayers that have been said for them, they firmly believe that the power of prayer brought them through the past year and to the organ transplant surgery that will help them to enjoy life, retirement, and winters in the sunshine together for many years to come.  The transplant is scheduled for late January 2023, the Gruba family continue to welcome prayers and are grateful for those include them in their thoughts and prayers.

Lend A Hand Up will boost your generous online donation by 20%.  Cash/Check donations should be made directly to Holly Gruba and dropped at Choice Bank | 4501 23rd Ave S | Fargo, ND 58104.

Tim has orders to move out of the ICU and into a Med-surg bed. At the moment we are waiting on a room to be available, the hospital is full to the brim. We don’t mind though as we have had excellent care on our current floor. Joe is happily recovering at home, in a real bed. We are hoping that he and Tim can reunite on Monday and continue recovering together at home. All of your prayers have been heard, we are witnessing that first hand with how well recovery is going. We can’t wait to thank as many of you as we can in person when we are able too. ";}

Tim’s labs have shown that his kidney function has improved from 7% pre op, to 29% two days after transplant. Joe, our amazing donor, was able to witness the Flag Raising Ceremony to honor his gift of life. Joe will be able to take this flag home with him after it has flown for 24 hours outside the hospital. Joe is also able to return to our home to finish his recovery. He is very excited because the hospital beds are not comfortable. We are continually amazed at the recovery speed for both of them. Tim is already more energetic and healthier looking than he was before the surgery. We extend our continued thanks and gratitude for everyone who has prayed for us, reached out, and donated for both Tim and Joe. We are blessed to have the support of so many. ";}
