In April, Ryder, the eldest son of Travis and Casey Schmidt, faced a frightening medical emergency while working in the Sanford ER in Fargo. During his shift, he experienced a syncopal episode, leading to an immediate and thorough examination by the medical team. The tests revealed multiple blood clots in his lungs and right-sided heart failure, culminating in a diagnosis of Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH). Despite being in the capable hands of the Sanford team, it became clear that Ryder needed more specialized care, necessitating a transfer to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. This transfer was fraught with logistical challenges due to the nature of his condition, which prevented him from flying. Thankfully, a relative’s intervention secured an ambulance from Bismarck, allowing Ryder to reach Mayo safely.

At Mayo, Ryder underwent a series of extensive tests, leaving his family feeling helpless as they watched him endure repeated procedures. After two weeks in the hospital, the family was sent home with a regimen of medications and a hopeful but uncertain timeline for recovery. Unfortunately, a recent angiogram confirmed that the medication did not have the desired effect, leading doctors to recommend a Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy (PTE) surgery. This complex procedure, involving a significant surgical intervention to remove chronic clots, was scheduled in August. The family is understandably anxious, navigating the uncertainty of Ryder’s condition and the potential risks of the surgery while clinging to hope and the support of their medical team.
