Jackson (West Fargo) was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at age 12 in 2018. Despite his best efforts to live a normal life through middle and high school, playing hockey, attending school, and hanging out with friends, he faced numerous health challenges. His Crohn’s disease required him to take an immunosuppressant, making even a common cold potentially severe. This past fall, a simple cold led to an abscess in his throat, hospitalization, and eventually a tonsillectomy. To manage the stress of staying healthy while attending school, he decided to switch to online learning, which helped him stay healthier and catch up academically, putting him on track for graduation.
Just as he was enjoying his senior year, Jackson was hit hard by pneumonia. Complications from the pneumonia led to a severe bacterial infection and fluid around his lungs. He was in the hospital for 2 weeks, enduring numerous painful procedures, including fluid drainage and multiple treatments to break up the tissue around the fluid. His hospital stay has been incredibly taxing. Jackson’s post-graduation plans such as visiting his brother in NYC and starting a summer job in construction to save money have been postponed as a full recovery is expected to take over two months. Additionally, he will be working with an extended care team at the Mayo hospital to evaluate alternative treatments for his Crohn’s disease.
Jackson’s mother was by his side throughout the hospital, unable to work or leave the hospital much. This has caused financial worry, as she anticipates needing more time off for upcoming appointments and continued care for Jackson. The situation has been incredibly tough for both Jackson and his family, but they are focused on his recovery and getting him back on track.
