Carissa Sjolie Fundraiser
Carissa was recently diagnosed with melanoma with metastasis to the liver, lungs, spleen and brain. In recent months, Carissa became a stay at home mom to her four beautiful children, ranging in age from 9 months to 9 years. Family and friends are hosting a taco bar benefit Friday, July 23rd from 4-10 pm at the West Fargo VFW. Please join us to raise help and hope for Carissa and her family as they go through this difficult time. Give online or send cash/checks payable to “Carissa Sjolie Benefit Fund” to Wells Fargo, 1401 13th Ave E, West Fargo, ND 58078.
PET Scan Results and Treatment Updates
Carissa had a PET Scan that showed the cancer throughout her skeletal system, lymph nodes, and additional areas. She had her first round of immunotherapy and also a radiation treatment for the lesion on her brain. Due to the pain, nausea, and extreme fatigue, Carissa was bed ridden for about a month.
However, things are looking up! Carissa has a genetic marker found in about 50% of melanoma patients. This genetic marker allowed her to start a new medication last week that is highly effective in temporarily stopping cancer cell growth which can lead to shrinking the size of the tumors. This medication has replaced her immunotherapy at this time. The first day of the new medication was Wednesday 5/5 and by Thursday evening, Carissa was able to sit at the dinner table with her family! She still tires easily, but has been feeling better overall.
Carissa, Chuck, and their family are so appreciative of all the support and prayers. Thank you all so much!
