Brian was admitted to Banner Health Care in Phoenix on January 1st, 2024, exhibiting symptoms of a stroke. During the examination, he experienced a significant seizure that resulted in the paralysis of his body. The following night, Brian ceased breathing and required the insertion of a breathing tube. As of January 21st, he has been transferred from the ICU but remains mostly unresponsive, grappling with severe respiratory issues and unexplained brain swelling.

Throughout this period, Marsha, Brian’s wife, has had to stay in a hotel room as their unexpected month-long stay in Arizona was not part of their plans. This situation, combined with escalating medical expenses, has placed them under significant financial strain. Since his discharge from the ICU, he has been receiving care at Select Care, a facility specializing in speech and breathing rehabilitation. He remains dependent on a tracheostomy tube and is gradually regaining his ability to speak. While his memory is improving, he still experiences long-term memory issues. Mobility-wise, he can move his left leg and arm, but struggles with his right leg and has no movement in his right arm. He is soon to transition to a transitional care facility to focus on physical rehabilitation. However, insurance limitations pose challenges for this transition and his eventual move to acute care. Plans are being made for transportation back home to Detroit Lakes by the end of April, with hopes that he will be able to continue outpatient rehabilitation upon his return. Brian and his wife are thankful to the kids for traveling to Arizona from Minnesota to help them out. Your online gift will be boosted by 20%, with 100% of your gift going directly to the family. Cash/checks may be gifted directly to Brian and Marsha Johansen.
