Brandon & Huxon Cossette

Father & Son

Ages:  Father 27 years & Son – 5 months old

Brandon was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia at an early age. This required him to have his first surgery at 3 months old which hooked his gallbladder up to his liver. His next surgery was right before his 5th Birthday when he received his liver transplant at the Children’s hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. He has been taking medications ever since then, but he has battled bouts of rejection, Epstein-bar virus, and ITP.

On July 30, 2021 he had some abdominal pain and went to the clinic to get checked out. He had a Colonoscopy on August 11th, 2021. On August 12th he had a PET scan done. This was all taking place while his son, Huxon was in the Minnesota Children’s hospital in the cities along with his wife, Paige.

Huxon was born with VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect). VSD is a hole in the wall separating the two lower chambers of the heart.  They monitored Huxon to see if it would close on its own or until he became symptomatic. He was having difficulty breathing causing poor feedings leading to poor weight gain. On August 6, 2021, Huxon had surgery to close the hole in his heart. Huxon arrived home with his mom & dad on August 14th on blood pressure medications and will need further follow-up tests.

Brandon developed Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma due to being on immunosuppression medications from his transplant. He has a mass in his colon and surrounding lymph nodes. He had a Bone Marrow biopsy on August 18th to determine if it is in the bone morrow.  The results did come in and it showed that it is not – Good news!  His Oncologist in Fargo collaborated with Brandon’s transplant team in Madison, Wisconsin to determine the best plan of care. The plan started on August 27th with his first chemo session. Brandon will be needing 6 sessions of chemotherapy treatment every 3 weeks. Please click on “Ways to Help” to see how you can help!
